I have used a different plan each time I’ve run a marathon. I’ve used 2-3 gels with water and drinking gatorade. Alternating between gatorade and water every 2 miles.
This time I think I’m going to take a gel at mile 6, 12 and 18 with water and drink gatorade the last 5 miles or so. I’m not a big fan of running on gatorade. I think it is a better replacement drink than during or before a race.
You should experiment a bit and see what works for you. I use power gels…I accidentally picked up a box of gels with caffeine in when I bought my last box, but I’ve run on it a couple times and it seems to be ok. Today I noticed a pick up in about 18 minutes after eating it, so I decided to take it at 6 miles because I usually start to feel sluggish at 8 miles into my marathons.
